During the Iron Age, the Talaiotic people began to build stone tombs, _navetas_, for their burial rites. The Naveta d'Es Tudons is the largest and best preserved of those. Made up of two chambers – the lower chamber used for the bones of the dead after the flesh had been removed, and the upper for the drying of recently placed corpses – the Naveta d'Es Tudons has stood the test of time and remains remarkably well preserved despite facing the elements outside and having no mortar to hold the stones in place. The Naveta d'Es Tudons is believed to have been used between 1400 and 900 BC and it offers a unique glimpse into what life was like for the island societies of Menorca and Mallorca during the Iron Age.
