Best Hawick Tours in 2026 – Book Self-Guided Experiences

Hawick

This self-guided audio walking tour explores the history of Stobs Camp, a major First World War military and prisoner-of-war site near Hawick in the Scottish Borders. It will appeal to travelers interested in wartime history, hidden landscapes, and the stories that survive long after buildings have gone.

The route begins at Stobs Camp W1 and leads you across the former camp grounds, where scattered traces reveal how this vast site once worked. Along the way, you pass Barns Viaduct, follow the procession route to the cemetery, and continue to places such as the Drying Hut, the WW1 store, the Bathing Pond, Black Lodge, the exercise yards, and the YMCA. The walk ends at the Wash & Cookhouse, rounding out a route that links daily routine, transport, remembrance, and confinement.

As you move through open fields and quiet remains, you will picture the camp’s scale and the lives shaped here during wartime. The most memorable moments come from standing where prisoners marched, imagining the bustle around the store and cookhouse, and encountering a landscape that feels peaceful today yet still holds the weight of memory.
