Free things
to do in Indianapolis

Last Updated: 14.04.2023

Nicknamed 'The Crossroads of America,' Indianapolis — or Indy, as called by the locals — is a vibrant and accessible midwestern city known for its love of sports, thriving culture, and affordability. Getting around is a breeze with its developed transport infrastructure. Plus, there is plenty of free stuff to do in Indianapolis!

Central Canal

What is it?
A landscaped urban waterway connecting downtown with the White River and offering various walking, cycling, and boating opportunities.

Why you should go?
This centrally located and accessible canal is perfect for a long stroll along its paved routes past landmarks, including the USS Indianapolis Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial, museums like the Indiana State Museum, and art objects such as the vivid 20-foot sculpture The Herron Arch I. Throw in a few scenic bridges, some cool underpass graffiti, some ducks and geese, lovely apartment buildings along the way, and a generally pretty landscape. And if you don't feel like walking (or cycling or renting a paddle boat), grab an ice cream and chill on a bench.

Best time to visit
Any time of the day, ideally in summer.

Perfect for
Those looking for some peace and quiet in the city — also certainly one of the top romantic things to do on a budget.

Indiana War Memorial & Museum

What is it?
A military museum housed in an imposing neoclassical building honoring the local veterans who took part in the wars of the last few centuries.

Why should you go?
The museum is the centerpiece of a larger complex, the Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, that includes a few buildings, monuments, and urban spaces serving as a tribute to the Hoosiers (as they call the locals of Indiana) who served in the nation's military conflicts. The structure is modeled upon the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and surely exudes grandeur. Inside, you will find a shrine to commemorate those who fought in the Great War and a chronologically organized exhibition of military artifacts, including a replica of the radio room of the USS Indianapolis with WWII equipment, an AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter, and over 400 military flags.

Best time to visit
Outside of the summer season, when the crowds subside (also, we recommend avoiding the place when school trips are there).

Perfect for
Military history buffs — or those strapped for cash but looking for free indoor things to do in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis City Market

What is it?
A historic public market with a variety of food stalls, a farmers' market, and a craft bar.

Why you should go?
Dating back to 1886, the City Market currently includes a hip urban food hall with ethnic eateries and artisanal products, a farmers' market selling locally sourced produce on Wednesdays, and a tap room with a rotating selection of local craft beer. While food is not exactly free, this vibrant space is also a feast for your eyes and can be enjoyed on its own. Also, guided tours of the City Market Catacombs — a vaulted ruin beneath the plaza — are available for a fee.

Best time to visit
Weekday mornings and later afternoons: lunchtime tends to get busy, and many booths close early/don't operate over the weekend.

Perfect for
Those feeling peckish and looking for that instagrammable - somewhat scruffy-urban food market vibe.

Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library

What is it?
A quaint museum dedicated to the work and legacy of the writer Kurt Vonnegut, perhaps the most famous Indianapolis native. Looking for something free to do in indianapolis?

Why should you go?
A short walk from the city center, this little museum is chock full of Vonnegut memorabilia: from his trusty old typewriter and reading glasses to the Purple Heart (that he got, according to his admission, for frostbite during WWII) and a box of his favorite Pall Malls that the writer's children found behind a bookcase after his death. Of course, Vonnegut's books are on display. Our favorite exhibit is the rejection letters one of America's best-known authors had received from editors. So it goes!

Best time to visit
Admission is free on the first Monday of each month.

Perfect for
Bookworms or anyone seeking some quiet entertainment.

Address:
543 Indiana Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46202, USA.

Massachusetts Avenue

From the oldest shoe shop in the US to the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis, you'd bump into local gems at every corner. Every first Friday of the month, local galleries, studios, and event venues join in for a celebration of arts and culture.
