The main facility of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and on public holidays.

The Museum is normally less busy on weekdays, mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit to avoid the crowds as much as possible.

Established in 1933, Seattle Art Museum is the place to go for culture lovers in this otherwise art-saturated city. Apart from the main museum in downtown, the complex includes Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) featuring a collection of historic and contemporary art from the Asian region, and the Olympic Sculpture Park, a waterfront public space with modern and contemporary sculpture.

The main facility opened in its current location in 1991. The collection includes around 25,000 works of art from around the world, spanning a wide range of cultures from antiquity to our times. From ancient American and Australian Aboriginal art to classical European paintings and prints and Islamic ceramics and watercolours, the collection covers many layers of human culture. All the while, modern and contemporary art is probably best represented at the museum.

Things to see and enjoy at the museum:

  • Hammering Man, the monumental kinetic sculpture of a worker in front of the museum (48 ft, or almost 15 m high)
  • Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John La Farge, and other American artists
  • Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Tintoretto, Goya, Matisse and other European masters
  • Pollock, Warhol, Shonibare, and Ai Weiwei — at the Modern & Contemporary section

Last but not least — why not grab a dozen oysters and a glass of rosé right there, at the Seattle Art Museum’s seafood restaurant? After all, Seattle is famous not only for its art, but also for its seafood.
