About Town Hall Square

Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is an open area in the Old Town of Tallinn that can be visited on any day and time of your choice all year round.

The best time for strolling outdoors in Tallinn is summer when the weather is mild and warm. However, Town Hall Square is a fantastic place to discover in winter, when the square looks like a Christmas Postcard. The fabulous Tallinn Christmas Market takes place on the square from late November to early January.

  • Stroll through the heart of the city

Being both a market and a meeting place for festive activities, Town Hall Square has been the city's social, commercial, and cultural center since the Middle Ages. In summer, this vibrant square is filled with outdoor cafes and hosts numerous festivals, fairs, and open-air concerts. In winter, it turns into an enchanting Christmas market with hot drinks, colorful lights, and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.

  • Catch the medieval vibe

Paved in cobblestones and surrounded by historic buildings, Town Hall Square is perfect for enjoying the medieval atmosphere. You can admire the magnificent Gothic building of Tallinn Town Hall, considered Northern Europe's oldest city hall. Another landmark building is Raeapteek — one of the oldest operating pharmacies in Europe, having sold medicines in the same house since 1422.

Town Hall Square is located in the Lower Old Town in the historic center of Tallinn. You can get there on foot from Baltic Station, the central train station of Tallinn, in less than 10 minutes.

You can also reach the square by bus or light rail. The nearest stop is Viru, served by light rail lines 3 and 4 and numerous bus routes. It is a 5-minute walk from Town Hall Square.
