On the same street, you'll admire the city's fourth-tallest skyscraper made of glass – the tower of the Bank of China. You have to save your strength, so the tour will lead you to the peaceful Hong Kong Park, which houses the world's biggest aviary and the unique Tea Ware Museum. Directions

From Admiralty MTR, walk toward Garden Road; Bank of China Tower stands at 1 Garden Road, Central.

Opened in 1990, Bank of China Tower is a 70-story office building designed by architect I. M. Pei. Its triangular framework takes inspiration from the structure and upward growth of bamboo, a symbol associated with strength and prosperity. The intersecting diagonal lines give the tower its distinctive silhouette and make it one of Hong Kong’s most recognizable skyscrapers. Rising above Garden Road in Central, it marks the city’s financial district and reflects an era when Hong Kong’s skyline was changing rapidly. The building is striking from several angles: in daylight, its geometry stands out against neighboring towers; after dark, its illumination makes it a prominent part of the skyline. As a working office building, it is also worth appreciating from the surrounding streets and pedestrian overpasses.

Before you enter

  • Check current access arrangements before planning to go inside; public visiting hours are not confirmed.
  • Save the address, 1 Garden Road, Central, so you can find the tower easily.
  • Bring a wide-angle camera lens if you want to fit the full tower into a street-level photo.

What to expect

  • Expect a working office skyscraper rather than a conventional sightseeing venue.
  • Look for the intersecting triangular lines that give the façade its bamboo-inspired appearance.
  • The nearby pedestrian overpass offers a useful vantage point for photographs.

During your visit

  • Step back from the base to appreciate the tower’s full outline.
  • Compare its appearance in daylight and after dusk if your schedule allows.
  • Keep pedestrian routes clear when stopping to take photos.
