You’ll pass some of Santander’s most important landmarks, including the Cathedral of Santander, Plaza Porticada, and the Paseo Marítimo and Los Raqueros, the much-loved bronze sculptures looking out over the bay. The tour finishes at the lift to Río de la Pila hill, where you can choose to continue to the viewpoint. Directions

Find Centro Botín on Paseo de Pereda, beside Santander’s waterfront at Plaza Emilio Botín.

Centro Botín is a contemporary art and cultural center on Santander’s waterfront, created to bring exhibitions and creative activity into the heart of the city. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, its modern form makes the building itself part of the experience, with spaces overlooking the bay. The center’s program features changing art exhibitions and cultural events rather than a single permanent display, so a return visit may offer something new. Visitors have also noted a room of donated art alongside the temporary exhibitions. Beside the Paseo de Pereda, Centro Botín connects Santander’s city promenade with its maritime setting. It is a place to experience art and architecture together, then step outside to take in the coastal views.

Before you enter

  • Check the current exhibition program if a particular artist or event interests you.
  • Note that Centro Botín is closed on Mondays.
  • On Tuesday through Friday, plan around the afternoon closure from 2 to 4 p.m.

What to expect

  • Expect rotating exhibitions, so displays may differ from photos or previous visits.
  • Allow time to appreciate Renzo Piano’s architecture as well as the artwork.
  • The waterfront setting is a major part of the visit, even if you spend little time inside.

During your visit

  • Look for elevated viewpoints over Santander’s bay.
  • Explore the exhibition rooms at your own pace; some installations reward a longer stop.
  • Leave time for a stroll along Paseo de Pereda afterward.
