The de Young Museum in San Francisco is open six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday. Its opening hours are 9:30 AM – 5:15 PM.
The museum remains closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
Due to its location in a large urban park, the museum becomes more attractive to visitors during the warm season. If you want to combine your visit with a pleasant walk or even a picnic, do it in spring or summer.
The museum usually gets busier after 11:00 AM, so the best way to avoid crowds and catch some quiet time is to arrive early in the morning.
The de Young Museum collection showcases American art from the 17th century to the present day. Wandering the museum halls, you can admire paintings, sculptures, and decorative art objects created by Native American cultures, European immigrants, enslaved Africans, and their descendants.
The museum celebrates the richness and diversity of art from different parts of the globe, including Oceania, Africa, and Central and South America. You will see a wide range of art pieces, from ancient figures made of terracotta to brilliantly colored mural fragments.
The museum collection includes thousands of textiles and costumes of any kind, from Turkmen carpets and Indian silks to couture pieces designed by Coco Chanel and Christian Dior.
The de Young Museum has a fantastic location in San Francisco's green oasis, Golden Gate Park, at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive. You can easily reach the museum by public transportation. The closest bus stops are Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr/de Young Museum for the 44 O'Shaughnessy route and Fulton St & 10th Ave for the 5 & 5R Fulton route.
You can also get to the museum via a free shuttle, which rides throughout Golden Gate Park.
General admission to the de Young Museum is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors over 65, and $6 for students with valid IDs. Access is free for children and youth under 17 and those with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco membership.
On the first Tuesday of every month, the museum offers free general admission to all visitors. Each Saturday, access to the permanent exhibition is free for residents of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area region.
The de Young Museum tickets also allow you to visit one more museum, the Legion of Honor, on the same day at no extra cost.
