The General Staff Building is one of the defining monuments of Palace Square in Saint Petersburg and a major work of Russian Empire architecture. Built in the early 19th century and designed by Carlo Rossi, it is famous for its immense curved facade and triumphal arch crowned with a chariot of Victory, created to commemorate Russia’s triumph over Napoleonic France. Historically, the complex housed the General Staff as well as key imperial ministries. Since 1993, its eastern wing has formed part of the State Hermitage Museum, giving the building a new cultural role. Today it is admired both for its grand exterior and for its modern museum interiors, where major art exhibitions and important collections are displayed with clear, visitor-friendly layouts.
