Directions

From Füssen station, take a bus toward Hohenschwangau, then follow the uphill path to the castle.

Hohenschwangau Castle stands on the site of the medieval fortress of Schwanstein, whose ruins Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria acquired in the 19th century. He rebuilt it in a Romantic, neo-Gothic style as a royal summer residence. His son, the future King Ludwig II, spent much of his childhood here, surrounded by the medieval legends that later influenced his vision for nearby Neuschwanstein Castle. Inside, painted rooms depict folklore, chivalry, and episodes from local history. Outside, the castle overlooks the Alpsee and the mountains near Füssen. Unlike Ludwig’s more theatrical castle across the valley, Hohenschwangau was a lived-in family home, offering a glimpse of royal life alongside its architecture and Alpine setting.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours and entry availability before leaving Füssen.
  • Allow time for the uphill walk from Hohenschwangau village.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; paths can be slippery after rain.

What to expect

  • Look for painted scenes inspired by medieval stories in the royal rooms.
  • Expect an intimate royal residence rather than a vast fortress.
  • The hillside setting offers views toward the Alpsee and surrounding mountains.

During your visit

  • Follow any photography restrictions posted inside the castle.
  • Take your time with the murals; their legends connect to Ludwig II’s later interests.
  • Save a few minutes for the views outside before walking back downhill.
