Insider tips for visiting Jersey City

WeGoTrip IncWeGoTrip Inc

When I visit Jersey City for a night out, I usually head straight to Downtown, especially the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza and nearby Grove Street. It’s the liveliest pocket in Jersey City after dark, with cocktail bars, craft beer spots, rooftop views, and late-night bites all within a few blocks. Locals know the energy spills onto the plaza on warm evenings, and the side streets around Grove have smaller bars that feel less polished and more fun. If you’re planning to visit Jersey City, this is the area I’d highlight in any travel guide Jersey City, especially if you want things to do in Jersey City that feel genuinely local.

When I’m in Jersey City, I always start with the waterfront at Liberty State Park—the skyline views at sunset are hard to beat, and the Empty Sky Memorial is genuinely moving. One of my favorite things to do in Jersey City is walk from Paulus Hook up to Newport along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, then stop for coffee around Grove Street. For visitors asking about what to see in Jersey City, I also recommend exploring Mana Contemporary or catching the neighborhood murals in the Powerhouse Arts District. Among the best attractions in Jersey City, these spots feel more local than obvious. Even most tours in Jersey City miss that everyday rhythm.

I recommend giving Jersey City at least two full days, and three if you like to move slowly. In my travel guide Jersey City, that’s the sweet spot: one day for the waterfront, Liberty State Park, and neighborhoods like Paulus Hook and Downtown, then another for food, local bars, and the artsy side around Bergen-Lafayette. When I visit Jersey City, I like having time to linger over coffee on Newark Avenue and catch sunset by the Colgate Clock instead of rushing through. If you plan to visit Jersey City just for a few hours, you’ll still find things to do in Jersey City, but the city opens up much more over a weekend.

When I visit Jersey City, I think first of its Indian food—Journal Square and Newark Avenue have some of the most satisfying dosas, chaat, and curries in the area, and locals don’t treat it as a trend; it’s part of daily life. Jersey City is also big on Italian deli culture, old-school pizza, and Filipino food, especially around West Side and Bergen-Lafayette. In my travel guide Jersey City, I always tell people to come hungry and mix neighborhood staples with newer chef-driven spots downtown. Honestly, eating well is one of my favorite things to do in Jersey City, because Jersey City’s food scene reflects who actually lives here.

In my travel guide Jersey City, I usually tell first-time visitors to stay Downtown, especially near Grove Street or Paulus Hook. That part of Jersey City is the easiest base if you want walkable cafés, good late-night food, PATH access, and quick waterfront views without feeling cut off from the city. When I visit Jersey City, I like Paulus Hook for a quieter stay—tree-lined blocks, brownstones, and a calmer pace—while Grove Street puts you closer to some of the best things to do in Jersey City after dark. If you plan to visit Jersey City and want convenience without losing neighborhood character, Downtown is the safest bet.

When I have a day in Jersey City, I usually mix the waterfront with a couple of neighborhoods so it doesn’t feel one-note. Some of my favorite attractions in Jersey City are Liberty State Park for harbor views, the Colgate Clock at golden hour, and the walk through Paulus Hook toward Exchange Place. If you’re deciding what to see in Jersey City, I’d also make time for Grove Street, where the restaurants and street life show the city’s everyday personality. Jersey City is best experienced slowly, and that’s why I usually skip most tours in Jersey City and just follow the waterfront, then wander inland a few blocks.
