About Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:00 PM.

If you want to avoid crowds, we suggest avoiding weekends and school holidays. It's best to book tickets in advance and for the first half of the day.

This imposing Norman fortress gave the city of Newcastle its name, and its walls and towers survive to this day. The earliest fortification at this site was a Roman fort called Pons Aelius ("bridge of Aelius" in Latin); it guarded the bridge over the River Tyne.

Newcastle Castle itself was built in the 11th century. Over the next few centuries, the Castle Keep and the Black Gate were added. These elements are the oldest surviving parts of the castle. There is nothing left of the original building.

While at Newcastle Castle, you can:

  • Explore a real-life Norman castle.
  • Visit the grim dungeons of the Castle Keep.
  • Take a walk through the imposing Black Gate.
  • Enjoy the finest view of the city from the castle roof.
  • Learn more about Newcastle's history.

Newcastle Castle is at the city's heart, so reaching it from any point in Newcastle is easy. You can travel to it via the green and yellow lines of the Underground or by one of the following bus routes: 1, 10A, 21, 27, X1, and X34.
