Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is located in the northeast part of Lucca's walled center.

Pisa is the closest city to Lucca. If going by train from Pisa, take the Trenitalia (FS) train at Pisa Centrale. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Pisa (itabus, MARINOBUS, FLIXBUS).

The best time to visit the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds, as it gets busy later in the afternoon.

Schedule about 30 minutes to come over to the charming Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.

  • Discover the city square built on the shell of an ancient amphitheater in Lucca

The amphitheater would fit some 10,000 spectators of the mortal gladiatorial games back in 200-100 B.C. It is now topped with the intimate Piazza dell'Anfiteatro square and the arena is 3 meters under its cobblestone surface.

  • Spark your fantasy of the original Roman amphitheater structure

See the residential buildings that encircle the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and line up over the remains of the tier structures. Walk along Via dell'Anfiteatro around the Piazza to see its vestiges within the backs of the houses.

  • Have a drink and a snack in one of the eateries edging the rims of the square

Do some people watching and ponder over the course of history that led to an ancient amphitheater becoming a modern yet nostalgic looking Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.

The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro in Lucca, Tuscany, is open daily, round the clock.
