Neuschwanstein Castle rises above the village of Hohenschwangau, near Füssen, in the Bavarian Alps. King Ludwig II began building it in 1869 as a private retreat inspired by medieval castles and the operas of Richard Wagner. Its turrets and dramatic hilltop setting look centuries old, but the castle is a work of 19th-century Romanticism. Inside, richly decorated rooms include the Singers’ Hall and the Throne Hall, where medieval imagery meets ambitious craftsmanship. Ludwig died in 1886 before the castle was completed, and it opened to the public soon afterward. Today, Neuschwanstein is one of Germany’s most recognizable landmarks, celebrated for its theatrical architecture and the views across the surrounding mountains and lakes.

Before you enter

  • Allow time to reach the castle from Hohenschwangau; the uphill approach takes longer than a glance at the map suggests.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, especially if you plan to walk up.
  • Check the day’s weather and path conditions before setting out, particularly in winter.

What to expect

  • Expect a steep approach and plenty of other visitors, especially on summer weekends.
  • The furnished rooms are richly decorated, but photography inside is not permitted.
  • Marienbrücke offers a famous castle view; it may be crowded or closed in poor conditions.

During your visit

  • Follow your assigned entry time closely; leave a buffer for the journey uphill.
  • Pause at the viewpoints along the approach for different views of the castle and Alpine landscape.
  • Keep to marked paths around the hilltop, particularly near steep slopes.
