The Basilica di Santa Croce dates back to the 13th century. Legend has it, this largest Franciscan church in the world was founded by St. Francis himself. The monumental complex of the church with its 16 chapels is a marvelous example of Gothic architecture that has undergone a number of transformations and renovations over the centuries.
It has also become home to over 4,000 works of art by some of the greatest masters of Italian art, some of whom are actually buried on its grounds. Some of the highlights include:
- Pazzi chapel, designed in the 15th century by Filippo Brunelleschi, a household name in the Italian Renaissance architecture
- Giotto's frescoes of the Life of St Francis that were plastered over for a while and restored in the 19th century in the Bardi Chapel
- Tombs of prominent Italians, including Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo, Foscolo, and Rossini
- Monuments to Dante and Florence Nightingale, plaques to commemorate Leonardo da Vinci and Enrico Fermi, among the others
- Art by Brunelleschi, Donatello, della Robbia, Vasari, and Canova, to name just a few
The church is located in the historic center of the city, at Piazza di Santa Croce, 16. You can reach it on foot from practically any central location or in about 20 min from Santa Maria Novella train station. Buses 23, C1, C2, and C3 stop in the streets nearby.
Getting to the museum by car is not the most convenient option, because it is within the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone), so please check the driving limitations in advance. There are a couple of car parks in the vicinity: Sant'Ambrogio and Beccaria.
Full price tickets cost €8. Tickets for children aged 12-17, students, school groups of up to 30 people, and groups of more than 15 people are €6. Families are charged €8 per adult, with free admission for children under the age of 18.
Florence municipality residents, children under the age of 11, persons with disabilities and their carers, accredited journalists, religious orders, Firenze Card holders, and authorized guides go free.
Admission to the Basilica is free for visitors who intend to pray or attend a religious service.
