Learn about the top-notch electric elevator built for the last German Empress
Guess why none of the German Kaisers was buried in the dynastic Hohenzollern Crypt
Follow the dramatic story of the Cathedral’s reconstruction after World War II
The Berlin Cathedral located in the heart of the historic city center is one of the most visited landmarks of the German capital. With this tour, you will explore Germany’s largest Protestant church and see why it is called unique with no hint of exaggeration. Built in the early 20th century, the Cathedral has survived the most turbulent times of the European past, and its rich history hides many secrets the tour is about to reveal.
Walking under the dome of the Cathedral, you will see the most sumptuous interior that a Protestant church has ever had. If the timing is right, you will have a chance to listen to the powerful ‘voice of God’ – the Sauer Organ with over 7,000 pipes, an exceptional creation of the Late Romantic era in German musical culture. You will learn about one of the most important dynastic tombs in Europe – the grim yet noble Hohenzollern Crypt lying underneath the Cathedral, and admire the richly decorated Imperial Stairs leading to the Imperial Box created for the Kaiser and his wife.
Berlin Cathedral we can see today is very different from the Cathedral that the Emperor Wilhelm II had seen in the last years of his reign. The tour will guide you through the fearsome years of two World Wars and tell the story of the phoenix risen from the ashes. But that’s only one chapter of the tale. At the end of the tour, you will climb 270 steps to the observation deck, enjoy the city landscape, and feel the lively vibe of Berlin’s bright present and future.
