London Adventure: Sightseeing with The Postal Museum Ticket
This proved to be a great few hours for 3 different generations in our family group. Staff were exceedingly helpful at all points of the day. All the relics retained were really interesting and well displayed. The separate exhibition was equally superb. (so good in fact, that after we had refreshments, my 9 year old grand-daughter wanted to go back in so that all areas were seen and enjoyed. She especially enjoyed making a stamp of her grandmother complete with big red lips and dangly ear-rings. I would happily return!

Directions

The British Museum is on Great Russell Street in central London, a short walk from Tottenham Court Road or Holborn.

The British Museum in London opened to the public in 1759, becoming one of the world’s first national public museums. Its vast collections trace human history, art, and culture across continents, from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to Greece and Rome. The museum is especially famous for its Egyptian mummies and major collections of ancient Greek sculpture, making it a key stop for anyone interested in global antiquity. Housed on Great Russell Street, it has long shaped how people study and encounter the ancient world. Today, the British Museum remains culturally significant for the scale and diversity of its holdings and for the conversations they inspire about empire, collecting, and shared world heritage.

Before you enter

  • Check current opening hours before visiting; Friday has the latest closing time.
  • Start with a shortlist of must-see galleries to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Arrive at opening for a smoother entry and quieter galleries.
  • Allow at least three hours; a full day suits deeper exploration.

What to expect

  • Expect enormous collections covering multiple civilizations and thousands of years.
  • The museum’s most famous displays include Egyptian antiquities and ancient Greek sculptures.
  • Galleries can feel overwhelming because there is far more than most visitors can see in one trip.
  • You will find a major world-history museum rather than a collection focused mainly on Britain.

During your visit

  • Begin with your priority rooms, then explore nearby galleries if time allows.
  • Use Friday’s extended evening hours for a longer, less rushed visit.
  • Take breaks during your visit; the size of the museum can be tiring.
  • Weekday mornings are often better for seeing headline objects with more space.
