Directions
Globe Theatre stands on London’s South Bank, across the Thames from the City of London. It recreates the playhouse built in 1599 for Shakespeare’s acting company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, where audiences first encountered many of his works. The original Globe burned down during a performance in 1613, was rebuilt the following year, and closed in 1642. The present theatre, opened in 1997 through the efforts of actor and director Sam Wanamaker, stands near the original site rather than directly on it. Its oak frame, thatched roof, open-air yard, and tiered galleries evoke the experience of Elizabethan theatre. Today, performances keep Shakespeare’s plays connected to the lively, shared audience experience for which the Globe became famous.
Before you enter
- Check the weather and bring a light rain layer; much of the theatre is open to the sky.
- If seated, consider a cushion: the wooden benches can feel hard during a long performance.
- Check the day’s schedule before arriving, as performances and other activities shape access to the space.
What to expect
- Expect an intimate theatre with a standing yard and galleries around the stage.
- The open-air setting brings daylight, changing weather, and a lively audience into the experience.
- The present Globe is a reconstruction near Shakespeare’s original playhouse, not the surviving 1599 building.
During your visit
- If standing in the yard, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to remain on your feet.
- Keep your phone silent so it does not interrupt performers or nearby visitors.
- Follow staff guidance on photography, especially when rehearsals or performances are underway.
