If you want to avoid crowds, we recommend visiting the Great North Museum on weekdays after 2:30 PM.

The Great North Museum: Hancock is a museum of natural history and world cultures. Formerly known as the Hancock Museum, this museum is a treasure trove of artifacts from all over the world and the inhabitants of the animal kingdom.

There are many exciting permanent exhibitions within the walls of the Great North Museum. Here are just some of them:

    • The Ancient Egypt Gallery. An eclectic collection of artifacts from Ancient Egypt.
    • The Ancient Greece Gallery. This exhibition features a rich selection of Greek and Etruscan artifacts.
    • Living Planet Gallery. This gallery lets you study the animal kingdom in all its variety and vibrance. Exhibits from different habitats like deserts, rainforests, and polar wastes are waiting for you!
    • Hadrian’s Wall Gallery. Learn more about the World Heritage Site in this exhibition. Maps, models, artifacts — you can find all these and more!
    • Fossil Stories Gallery. Take a photo with a full-size T-Rex skeleton and marvel at the majesty of the various extinct creatures that walked the Earth millions of years ago.

The Great North Museum is located on the campus of Newcastle University in the north of Newcastle City Center. There is no parking lot near the museum, so it’s preferable to travel there via the Underground or a bus.

For example, if you want to reach the museum from Chinatown, you need to board a train at the Central Station. Exit the train at Haymarket Station and follow the Great North Road towards Clermont Road. Once you reach Clermont Road, turn left, walk to the traffic light, cross the road, and you’re there!
