Larimer Square occupies a block of Larimer Street at the heart of Denver’s early commercial district. The street takes its name from William Larimer, who helped establish Denver City in 1858 during the Colorado gold rush. As the city grew, businesses filled this block, leaving a collection of 19th-century buildings that later faced the threat of demolition. In the 1960s, preservationist Dana Crawford led an effort to restore the buildings and make the block a lively destination again. Larimer Square became Denver’s first historic district in 1971, setting an important precedent for local preservation. Today, its brick facades, shops, restaurants, and strings of lights make the square a recognizable place to experience the city’s past alongside its present-day street life.
