About Luxembourg City History Museum
You can visit the museum during all days of the week except Mondays. On Thursdays, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On other days of the week, its opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Spring is the best season to visit this museum because the tourist season hasn’t begun yet, and you can explore the museum at your leisure. Additionally, we recommend going there on weekdays or in the morning, if you want to avoid crowds. Alternatively, Thursday evenings allow free entry to the museum, so you may want to visit between 5 and 8 p.m.
The Luxembourg City History Museum is a relatively recent addition to the list of tourist attractions of Luxembourg (established in 1996); however, it is a museum well worth your time. Here are some of the highlights of this museum:
- Visit a unique building. The museum resides inside four restored houses dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. These houses connect with a floating glass façade, creating a unique mixture of ancient and modern that is one of the features of Luxembourg itself.
- Ride inside a giant glass elevator. This elevator can accommodate up to 65 people and offers a breathtaking view of the city and the museum.
- Explore a rich collection of artifacts. The museum offers you an opportunity to study its collections of historical artifacts from the history of Luxembourg.
- Visit an old mill. Muerbelsmillen (Mohrfel’s Mill) is an old mill from the 11th century. Today, you can explore its mechanisms and see a special exhibition.
The Luxembourg City History Museum is not far from downtown; it’s easy to reach by bus or on foot. Bus routes 19 and 20 are your best option; disembark at the Kasinosgaas bus stop, walk along Rue du Fossé, and turn left at Rue de la Reine. Continue walking along Rue de la Reine until you reach Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, turn left, and walk straight for two minutes.
