Directions

Notre-Dame Cathedral is on Rue Notre Dame in central Luxembourg City, a short walk from Place Guillaume II.

Built from 1613 as a Jesuit church, Notre-Dame Cathedral became Luxembourg’s cathedral in 1870, when the city became the seat of a Catholic diocese. Its architecture combines late Gothic forms with Renaissance details. A 20th-century enlargement gave the building its present scale, while its three spires became a familiar part of the city’s skyline. Inside, look for stained glass, sculpted details, and the image of Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted. Devotion to her is central to Luxembourg’s annual Octave pilgrimage. The crypt is a burial place for members of the grand-ducal family and for John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg. More than a historic landmark, the cathedral remains an active place of worship and a focus of national religious tradition.

Before you enter

  • Check current visiting hours and service times before setting out.
  • Wear clothing suitable for an active place of worship.
  • Allow time to see the exterior from the surrounding streets.

What to expect

  • Notice how the older Gothic-inspired structure meets the later enlargement.
  • Look for stained glass and the image of Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted.
  • Crypt access may vary; check on site if you hope to visit it.

During your visit

  • Keep your voice low, especially when people are praying.
  • Follow posted guidance on photography and restricted areas.
  • If a service begins, give worshippers space and avoid walking through the congregation.
