Gëlle Fra, or the “Golden Lady,” is the Monument of Remembrance on Place de la Constitution in Luxembourg City. Erected in 1923, it honors Luxembourgers who volunteered to fight with the Allied forces in the First World War. Sculptor Claus Cito’s gilded female figure holds a laurel wreath atop a granite obelisk, with bronze figures of soldiers at its base. Nazi occupiers pulled the monument down in 1940, making it a powerful symbol of Luxembourg’s national identity and resistance. The statue was rediscovered decades later, and the monument was restored in 1985. Today it also serves as a place of remembrance for those who died in later conflicts. Its position above the Pétrusse Valley adds sweeping views to a reflective visit.
