About Madama Palace

The museum is open to visitors Wednesday to Monday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last admission at 5:00 PM.

Palazzo Madama is an indoor museum, so you don't need to be concerned about weather conditions. There are fewer visitors during fall and winter, so it's best to visit this museum then. We also recommend going there on weekdays or in the morning for the same reason.

This luxurious palace received its name thanks to extensive renovations and changes made by two residents, Christine of France and Marie Jeanne of Savoy. Both were regents of Savoy, hence the palace's nickname. Currently, the Madama Palace hosts the Museum of Ancient Art. Here are some of the points of interest in this palace:

  • A unique mixture of various architectural styles. The building stands on the site of a gate to the Roman settlement of Augusta Taurinorum. Later on, it was transformed into a castle; then, it became a residence for the ruling family of Savoy. You can still see elements from different ages in the palace interior.
  • It has a rich and diverse collection of art. Despite the museum's name, the art on display at Palazzo Madama is from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the 17-18th centuries.
  • It's a vast repository of knowledge on the art of Piedmont. Preserving and sharing the art of Piedmont was a goal set in 1861 during the museum's establishment. Currently, Palazzo Madama is home to one of the largest collections of applied arts in Italy.

Palazzo Madama is at the heart of Turin, in Piazza Castello. You can get there by bus, tram, train, or on foot. The following bus routes pass close to Palazzo Madama: 8, 11, 50, 55, 56, and 72. Trams 4 and 13 will get you close to the museum as well.
