Kraków's Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is an outdoor space accessible 24 hours a day all year round.
Main Market Square is bustling with life at any time of year and is worth visiting both during the day and at nighttime when all the buildings are beautifully lit up.
The square houses Christmas and Easter markets and numerous open-air concerts and festivals every year. The busiest season is summer, and the quietest time is the late autumn when the city is not very crowded with tourists.
Main Market Square, designed in the 13th century, is not only the beating heart of Kraków and one of the city's most iconic landmarks. It covers 3.79 hectares (9.4 acres) and is considered the most expansive medieval plaza in Europe. Being set up at the intersection of ancient trading routes, it became the center of social and political life and the place of triumphs, parades, lavish weddings, and public executions.
The square features a wide range of must-see sights and attractions. The center of the plaza is dominated by the striking Renaissance building of Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) and the 15th-century Town Hall Tower. On the square's northeast, you can see the splendid 14th-century Basilica of St. Mary, with its impressive Gothic towers. Another point of interest is the tiny Church of St. Adalbert, built almost a thousand years ago and partially reconstructed in the 17th century.
Main Market Square is the central point of Kraków's Old Town. This area of the city is mostly pedestrian, so there is no direct access to the square by public transportation. However, you can quickly get there on foot from any of the light rail stations surrounding the Old Town. For instance, it is just a 5-minute walk from Plac Wszystkich Świętych, served by lines 1, 6, 8, 13, and 18.
There is no need to purchase a ticket to visit the square. Access is always free of charge.
