The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado has been in the Convent of São Francisco da Cidade since 1911. This set of buildings suffered serious damage in the 1755 earthquake, and after a fire in 1988, the museum reopened in 1994. The museum was created by splitting the former National Museum of Fine Arts into two. The National Museum of Ancient Art received works made until 1850. The National Museum of Contemporary Art hosts works from after 1850 and is now situated in the Convent of São Francisco.
