Insider tips for visiting Tarragona

WeGoTrip Inc

WeGoTrip Inc is a local guide who has been publishing tours since for your discovery of hidden gems and local specialities of Tarragona on their personal guide page (view profile). Explore their expert tips planning trip to Tarragona.

When I visit Tarragona, I always make time for the local seafood and rice dishes. Tarragona is especially good for suquet de peix, a rich fishermen’s stew, and arroz caldoso made with prawns or cuttlefish. Locals also swear by romesco, the nut-and-pepper sauce that often comes with fish or calçots in season. If you visit Tarragona in summer, order xató or grilled sardines near the Serrallo fishing quarter, where the catch is freshest. In my travel guide Tarragona notes, food here is one of the best things to do in Tarragona because it feels tied to the port, the markets, and everyday life in Tarragona.

When I visit Tarragona alone, I always recommend walking the old city walls and then following the path down to the Balcó del Mediterrani. For solo travelers, it’s one of the most rewarding things to do in Tarragona because you can move at your own pace and pause wherever the city opens to the sea. I usually continue through the Roman Circus area and end in El Serrallo for a quiet lunch by the fishing boats. Among the best attractions in Tarragona, this route gives you a real feel for what to see in Tarragona, and it’s more personal than most tours in Tarragona.

In my travel guide Tarragona notes, I usually tell friends to stay in Part Alta if they want atmosphere and easy walks between Roman ruins, small bars, and the cathedral. When I visit Tarragona, I like waking up there before the day-trippers arrive, especially around Plaça del Fòrum and Carrer Major. If you prefer being closer to the beach and evening seafood restaurants, El Serrallo is a good alternative and feels more local after dark. For most first-time visitors, though, Tarragona’s old town puts the best things to do in Tarragona within reach and makes it easy to visit Tarragona without relying on transport.

When I want quieter attractions in Tarragona, I slip into the Passeig Arqueològic early, when the Roman walls catch the morning light and the city still feels half-asleep. I also recommend the small lanes behind the cathedral, especially Carrer de les Coques, where Tarragona feels more lived-in than staged. One of my favorite hidden corners in Tarragona is the amphitheater viewpoint from Parc de l’Amfiteatre rather than the monument itself. If you’re deciding what to see in Tarragona beyond the obvious, I’d add the fishermen’s quarter of El Serrallo at sunset. It shows more character than many standard tours in Tarragona.

When I visit Tarragona and want a lively evening, I usually head to Part Alta. The old town has the best mix of small wine bars, late dinners, and plazas that stay busy without feeling flashy. Around Plaça de la Font, Tarragona fills up with locals going for vermouth, tapas, and a second round after midnight. If you prefer something more relaxed, El Serrallo is great for seafood dinners and waterfront drinks. In my travel guide Tarragona notes, Part Alta works best if you want nightlife within walking distance of many things to do in Tarragona, while still feeling connected to everyday Tarragona life.

In my travel guide Tarragona notes, I usually recommend two nights. That gives me one full day for the Roman sites and Part Alta, then another slower day for the market, El Serrallo, and time by Platja del Miracle or the Balcó del Mediterrani. If you only visit Tarragona on a day trip, you can see the highlights, but Tarragona feels better when you stay long enough for the evenings, when locals come out around Plaça de la Font. For me, the best things to do in Tarragona are not just monuments but the rhythm of the city, and that takes a little time to appreciate.
