TOP-20 best things to do in Dubai

Dubai, the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, is best known for being a popular luxury travel destination, with its exquisite hotels, shopping malls, and massive skyscrapers. In fact, it's much more than that — and we'd like to guide you around the desert metropolis with our list of the 20 best things to do in Dubai.

Burj Khalifa

What is it?
The most iconic landmark in Dubai and the tallest skyscraper in the world.

Why should you go?
No trip to Dubai is possible without visiting the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. This neo-futuristic tower is visible literally from any spot in the city, standing 828 meters tall with 160 floors. Completed in 2010, it holds a bunch of world records and has received numerous awards for its architecture. Inside, you'll find bars and restaurants, a hotel, a spa, a gym with a rooftop pool, and (what you're here for) the world's highest observation deck with stunning views.

You can explore this major landmark and a few other popular sites with our one-day audio tour that covers the best of Dubai (tickets to levels 124 & 125 are included).

The Dubai Mall

What is it?
One of the largest malls in the world and the place to go shopping in Dubai.

Why should you go?
Located in the heart of downtown Dubai, adjacent to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall is bigger than any large shopping center you've ever been to. With over 1,200 outlets, this is the place to unleash your inner diva (mind you, there's a wide range of shops for any budget!). There are also over 200 places to eat and lots of entertainment options for the whole family. How about visiting the massive Aquarium, home to thousands of sea creatures? Or exploring Souk Al Bahar, a modern take on traditional Arab marketplaces? Or, perhaps, just watching a movie at a truly luxurious cinema?

Our self-guided audio tour includes the mall, but we suggest that you spend a whole day here!

The iconic sail-shaped luxury hotel off Jumeirah Beach.
Why should you go? Sitting on an island of reclaimed land, Burj Al Arab was built in 1999, and its elegant silhouette has quickly become one of the most recognizable symbols of Dubai. With 199 exclusive suites (each one with magnificent views of the Arabian Gulf), eight exquisite restaurants, a helipad, a sumptuous spa, and two pools, this is the ultimate luxury resort.

You don't really have to splurge on a suite should you wish to experience this luxury, though — you can book a tour or make a dining reservation. Just remember: dress to impress — no flip-flops!

Dubai Spice Souk

What is it?
One of the traditional Arab marketplaces selling various herbs and spices.

Why should you go?
Dubai is home to a number of traditional Arab bazaars or souks — and visiting this one is, in our opinion, a must-do in Dubai. Located along Deira's waterfront, the Spice Souk embraces you with a warm sea of colors, scents, and sounds — the very sight of it feels mouthwatering, and mountains of vibrant spices make for great photos. Get your saffron and rose petals, barberries, and dried limes, as well as teas, household goods, silver, souvenirs, and whatnot. Now, for the most authentic experience, prepare to be harassed by the vendors, too; also, get ready to haggle!

This souk, as well as a few others, is included in the tour of old Dubai.

A museum dedicated to preserving and displaying the history of the UAE.

Why should you go?
The Etihad Museum, located at the spot where the UAE was founded back in 1971, encompasses the Union House, which was the birthplace of the nation. The architecture alone makes it worth visiting: the ultra-modern 25,000 square meters museum, with its sleek undulating curves, was designed to resemble the shape of the country's constitution. Inside, you will find a range of interactive exhibits showcasing the events that led to the unification of the Emirates in 1971, with a particular focus on the period between 1968 and 1974.

Perfume Souk

What is it?
Perfume market selling traditional Arab fragrances in all forms.

Why should you go?
We love markets, and we're convinced that hanging out in these bustling spaces is one of the really fun things to do in Dubai. Luckily, it is home to a few souks, and perfume is one of the best souvenirs you can bring from the Middle East. Here, you'll find all sorts of fragrances in all shapes and forms — stick, powder, crystal, rock, wood, and, of course, incense and oils. You can even have a custom perfume made specifically for you. Don't forget to haggle!

Why should you go? This enormous waterpark is home to over 105 slides, attractions, and experiences and is one of the best attractions in Dubai when it comes to active entertainment. Relax on the gorgeous private beach or conquer some of the rides: the waterslides here cater to all tastes (how about plunging from the height of nine stories down an almost vertical drop and then sliding through a shark-filled lagoon?)

It's not just about the rides, though. Get up close with the friendly dolphins or meet the resident sea lions, scuba dive, walk, or even do yoga underwater in the Lost Chambers Aquarium while being surrounded by 65,000 aquatic creatures.

Historic district offering a glimpse into local life before its modern development.

Dubai is not all about skyscrapers and sleek modern luxury! Also known as Al Bastakiya, this heritage site dates back to the 19th century and offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the contemporary city, making it one of the best things to do in Dubai. With its narrow winding alleys and traditional air towers built from sandstone, teak, gypsum, palm wood, and sandalwood, this historical neighborhood is positively different.

Besides, it is home to a number of cultural venues and cafés serving traditional Arab food: check out the cozy Coffee Museum, explore contemporary art at the XVA Gallery, and grab some lunch at the Arabian Tea House Café!

Bait Al Banat Women's Museum

What is it?
A museum dedicated to the role of women in the UAE.

Why should you go?
Although the UAE fares somewhat better than most of the other states in the Gulf region in terms of women's rights, there is still considerable gender discrimination prevalent in the country. This makes a trip to the Women's Museum even more interesting.

Established by a female Emirati professor, the exhibition is focused on women's contribution to the local culture, business, politics, education, and society in general. The image it paints is that of success and appreciation: check out the poetry section! (Yet we also encourage you to read up on less celebratory aspects of gender and power relations in the UAE).

If you want to learn more about the museum, make sure to take a walking tour of old Dubai.

Currently, it can hold up to 1,200 worshippers. The most recognizable feature of the church is its 70-meter minaret that resembles a lighthouse.

The local Snow Park has various attractions to offer, including sled and toboggan runs, a giant zorbing ball, an ice cave, a Mountain Thriller ride, and many more. XLine Dubai Marina

What is it?
World's longest urban zipline, located in Dubai Marina.

Why should you go?
Connecting the affluent residential man-made canal district Dubai Marina with the Dubai Marina Mall, the XLine Dubai Marina is one of the things to do in Dubai that is not for the faint of heart. Advertised as one of the steepest and fastest ziplines around the world, it is 1 km long and up to 170 m high.

Basically, they strap you in and let you fly above the streets of Dubai with an average speed of 80 km/h. A camera is mounted on your helmet, and you'll get your personal video after the ride. This is a great opportunity to admire the grandeur of the city from a bird's-eye view (all the while looking like an ersatz-Superman).

But if you don't feel like flying today, you can always explore the Marina with our walking tour.

The menu is not vast, but you've got a few options to choose from in a three-course menu. Ossiano

What is it?
A Michelin-starred seafood restaurant with views into a huge aquarium.

Why should you go?
Located in the basement of the Atlantis Hotel, Ossiano has one Michelin star and is number four in the top 50 best restaurants of the MENA region. The dining experience here is literally immersive: you'll be facing a massive aquarium with all sorts of fish, sharks, and stingrays swimming past your table (they'll probably be looking at you with disdain while you're consuming their relatives).

The emphasis of the menu is, of course, on fish and seafood: we drool at the very thought of the 10-wave tasting menu that is inspired by Chef Grégoire Berger's love and respect of the sea and all its seasonal gifts, the traditional French cooking techniques, and cutting-edge approach to the art of fine dining.

The restaurant is open from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM; book in advance, and dress smart and elegant.
