Walters Art Museum: Self-Guided Audio Tours

This self-guided audio walking tour explores Baltimore’s historic and cultural heart through architecture, art, libraries, churches, and unusual local landmarks. It is ideal for first-time visitors who enjoy layered city stories, from grand monuments and museum collections to craft workshops and quirky public art. The route begins at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower on the western edge of downtown, then heads north through the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the G. Krug & Son Ironworks & Museum. From there, you continue past St. Mary’s Seminary Chapel, Orchard Street Church, A.T. Jones & Sons, and the giant RCA dog known as Nipper, before entering the Mount Vernon area. In and around Mount Vernon, the walk takes you to the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Washington Monument, the George Peabody Library, and The Walters Art Museum, then past the Lord Baltimore Hotel, C. Grimaldis Gallery, and The Woman’s Industrial Exchange. The tour ends near another branch point of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in the central city area. Along the way, the most memorable moments include seeing Baltimore’s famous clock tower, standing near Edgar Allan Poe’s burial place at Westminster, discovering one of America’s oldest continuously operating ironworks shops, gazing into the soaring stacks of the Peabody Library, and meeting the oversized Nipper, one of the city’s most unexpected sights.
