Insider tips for visiting Alicante

WeGoTrip Inc

WeGoTrip Inc is a local guide who has been publishing tours since for your discovery of hidden gems and local specialities of Alicante on their personal guide page (view profile). Explore their expert tips planning trip to Alicante.

When I visit Alicante, I usually recommend staying in the Old Town around Barrio de Santa Cruz if you want character, evening strolls, and easy walks to the beach and castle. The lanes are steep but full of flowered balconies, tiny bars, and quiet corners locals still use. For a calmer base, I like the area near Plaza de Gabriel Miró and the port: elegant streets, good rice restaurants, and less late-night noise. In any travel guide Alicante needs this nuance: the best area depends on how you want to visit Alicante. For food, walks, and many things to do in Alicante, central Alicante is the sweet spot.

When I visit Alicante, I usually head first to the streets around Avenida Maisonnave for the widest mix of Spanish fashion, department stores, and polished city shopping. If I want something more local, I wander Mercado Central and the surrounding streets, where Alicante feels more lived-in: gourmet stalls, old-fashioned bakeries, and small specialty shops. Locals know that nearby Calle Castaños and the lanes toward Rambla Méndez Núñez are good for independent boutiques and shoe stores. If you visit Alicante for more than beach time, shopping here is one of the practical things to do in Alicante, and any solid travel guide Alicante should mention both modern Alicante and its traditional center.

When I’m in Alicante alone, my favorite plan is to walk up through Santa Cruz early, then continue to Santa Bárbara Castle before the heat builds. For solo travelers, it’s one of the best things to do in Alicante because you can move at your own pace and the route never feels awkward or isolated. I usually stop for coffee near Plaza del Carmen, then linger over the castle views of the port and Postiguet. If you’re deciding what to see in Alicante, this gives you history, local life, and sea views in one stretch. Among the classic attractions in Alicante and tours in Alicante, this feels the most independent and rewarding.

When I visit Alicante for food, I split my time between the Mercado Central area and the streets around Calle Castaños. Near the market, Alicante feels most authentic in the morning: seafood counters, salted fish shops, and small bars serving quick tapas with vermouth. In the evening, I like the side streets off Castaños and the Centro Tradicional, where you’ll find good rice dishes, montaditos, and more local energy than the seafront. If you visit Alicante mainly to eat, these neighborhoods give you the best range without feeling staged. Any useful travel guide Alicante should say that food is one of the real things to do in Alicante, not just an afterthought.

When I want to get beyond the center, I usually take the TRAM from Alicante to Villajoyosa or Altea. Both are easy day trips, and they add a lot to the usual attractions in Alicante. Villajoyosa has colorful fishermen’s houses and a more working-town feel, while Altea is better for whitewashed lanes and hilltop views. Closer to Alicante, I like the coves around Cabo de las Huertas for a swim and a coastal walk that locals use year-round. If you’re deciding what to see in Alicante, I’d include at least one nearby town and one shoreline escape. Among the broader tours in Alicante, these are the outings I find most rewarding.
