Insider tips for visiting Brussels

Sergio Clementini

Sergio Clementini is a local guide who has been publishing tours since 2022 for your discovery of hidden gems and local specialities of Brussels on their personal guide page (view profile). Explore their expert tips planning trip to Brussels.

When I’m in Brussels, I always split my time between the Marolles, Saint-Gilles, and the Sablon. The Marolles feels wonderfully rough-edged and local; I like wandering up from Place du Jeu de Balle after the morning flea market toward the Palais de Justice views. In Saint-Gilles, Brussels shows its creative side—Art Nouveau facades, independent cafés, and streets around Parvis that locals actually use. For a more polished afternoon, I recommend the Sablon for antique shops, chocolatiers, and a quiet pause at Petit Sablon. These are my favorite attractions in Brussels because they reveal the city’s character, especially if you’re deciding on tours in Brussels and what to see in Brussels.

When I want a romantic side of Brussels, I head for the Mont des Arts at dusk, then wander down into the historic center as the lights come on. For me, one of the most memorable things to do in Brussels is sharing an apéro around Place Sainte-Catherine before a quiet walk through the covered Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. Brussels feels especially intimate in the evening, and locals know the small streets behind the Grand Place are best once the daytime crowds thin out. If you’re weighing what to see in Brussels, I’d start there—these are more personal attractions in Brussels than the usual tours in Brussels suggest.

When I visit Brussels, I mostly combine the metro, trams, and my own feet. Brussels is compact enough that I often walk between the Grand Place, Sablon, and Marolles, but I use the tram for longer stretches like Flagey to Cinquantenaire. If I were writing a travel guide Brussels visitors could actually use, I’d say skip driving; traffic and one-way streets are a headache, and parking in Brussels is rarely worth it. Locals know tram 92 and 93 are handy through central areas, and the metro is quickest for the European Quarter. It’s the easiest way to visit Brussels while keeping your time for things to do in Brussels.

When I tell friends to visit Brussels, I always start with the food: proper frites with mayonnaise, waffles done two ways, mussels, and the city’s deep beer culture. In Brussels, I prefer a crisp Brussels waffle from a small counter to the overloaded versions aimed at tourists, and I’ll take stoemp or a good vol-au-vent when I want something locals actually eat. Around Sainte-Catherine, Brussels is especially strong for seafood. If I were making a travel guide Brussels visitors could trust, I’d say tasting these classics is one of the essential things to do in Brussels, especially if you want the city beyond postcard clichés.

When I visit Brussels, I usually recommend staying in Saint-Gilles or around Sainte-Catherine, depending on your style. Saint-Gilles gives you beautiful Art Nouveau streets, good cafés, and a lived-in Brussels feel, while Sainte-Catherine is ideal if you want seafood, easy walks, and lively evenings without sleeping right on the busiest squares. If I were writing a travel guide Brussels travelers could use on day one, I’d say avoid staying too close to the Grand Place unless location matters more than atmosphere. Brussels is easy to cross by tram and metro, so I prefer neighborhoods where locals actually spend time. It makes it much easier to visit Brussels and enjoy the best things to do in Brussels naturally.

When I want to shop in Brussels, I usually choose the area around Avenue Louise for fashion, the Sablon for antiques and design, and Saint-Gilles for smaller independent finds. If you visit Brussels and want something more local, I love the streets around Châtelain, where boutiques, homeware shops, and food stores feel much less predictable than the big chains. In central Brussels, the Galeries Royales are beautiful, but I find the side streets around Dansaert more interesting for Belgian labels and contemporary style. In my travel guide Brussels mindset, shopping works best when mixed with cafés and wandering—it’s one of the more enjoyable things to do in Brussels if you follow the neighborhoods locals actually use.
