Lennusadam, or the Seaplane Harbor, is part of the Estonian Maritime Museum and includes the harbor and the museum based in a century-old hangar that was originally used for seaplanes until WWII. Open since 2012, this award-winning, spacious, and well-organized museum in a beautiful location is one of the most popular places amongst the visitors of Tallinn.
Highlights of the museum and the harbor include:
- Lembit, one of the few surviving pre-WWII submarines that was launched in Britain in 1936, was the oldest submarine in the world still afloat when it was hauled out in 2011. Now, out of the water and restored to its original look, this minelayer is the true centerpiece of the hangar - not to mention that you can get inside and explore it yourself.
- The Suur Tõll icebreaker, located at the quay of the Seaplane Harbour. Built in 1914 by the German AG Vulcan in Stettin (now Szczecin in Poland), this steam-powered ship famously changed its name and nationality quite a few times over the years — from Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich of the Russian Empire to the Soviet Volynets, to the Finnish Wäinämöinen, to the Estonian Suur Tõll — then again, Volynets, and, finally, Suur Tõll at present.
- You can see a Short 184 seaplane replica.
- The 14th-century Lootsi cog, one of the largest medieval shipwrecks in Europe was discovered beneath the streets of Tallinn during construction works.
- Mines, cannons, uniform, a flight simulator, and whatnot… even if you don’t consider yourself a maritime history buff, this museum will likely make you one!
The Lennusadam is located at Vesilennuki, 6 in Tallinn’s hip Kalamaja neighborhood. A walk from the city center would take you less than 30 minutes.
