About Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The Museum is open all week except Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It is closed on January 1st, Good Friday, May 1st, November 1st and 11th, and December 25th.

The Museum does not usually get extremely busy, however, we recommend visiting on weekday mornings and outside of the tourist season (summer and Christmas).

Sitting on the bank of the river Ill, The Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS) is an impressive glass building with over 18,000 works displayed on almost 5,000 square meters. Founded in 1973, the Museum opened in its own building designed by the AFA Architecture Workshops with an "inner street" feeling in mind in 1998. It hosts a vast and diverse collection of art that dates back from 1870 to our times and organizes three to four exhibitions per year, paying special attention not only to renowned artists but also to young talent.

Things to check out:

  • Works by Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Gilles Aillaud, Malcolm Morley, and many other world-famous artists
  • A selection of local Alsatian artists whose works represent Art Nouveau, Expressionism, and New Realism: Charles Spindler, René Beeh, Jean-Désiré Ringel d'Illzach, and others
  • The first cubist painting ever acquired for a French public collection, Braque's Still Life (1911), purchased in 1923
  • The room dedicated to the works of Gustave Doré, the 19th-century artist from Strasbourg (the Museum has over 400 of his works)
  • Thousands of photographs showcase the evolution of the art of photography, from its inception until today
  • The horse sculpture Hortus conclusus by Italian artist Domenico Paladino on the roof of the building
  • The panoramic terrace that offers a great view of the Covered Bridges and the Petite France district and has a nice cafe

The Museum’s address is 1 Place Hans-Jean-Arp, 67000 Strasbourg. It is easily accessible from most of Strasbourg’s historic locations on foot, by bike, or by public transport.

Musée d'Art Moderne is the nearest tram and bus stop (line B/ buses number 10 and N1), located about a 4 min walk away. Alternatively, trams B and F stop at Faubourg-National-Gare, also very close.

Parking Centre-Historique-Petite-France is located just round the corner on Rue de Molsheim and is reasonably priced and convenient, although we do recommend walking or using public transport in the old town.

The Museum is located within walking distance of the route of our tour that takes you to the major historic locations of Strasbourg’s Grande Île, under 20 min walk to either starting point or final stop of the tour.
