Pitti Palace, or Palazzo Pitti, is one of Florence’s grandest Renaissance residences. Built in the 15th century for the powerful Pitti family, it later became the home of the Medici, the dynasty that shaped Florence’s political and cultural life. Over time, the palace expanded into a vast complex that reflected dynastic power, courtly taste, and artistic patronage. Today it is valued both as a historic royal residence and as a major museum complex, known for its richly decorated state rooms, ornate ceilings, and important collections of Italian and European art. Its setting beside the Boboli Gardens also highlights the palace’s role in the ceremonial and cultural landscape of Florence.

The Pitti Palace, or Palazzo Pitti in Italian, is the largest museum in Florence. Located in a magnificent three-story building from the second half of the 15th century, this museum complex used to be the residence of the rulers of the Great Duchy of Tuscany. Nowadays, it is home to five separate museums. Here is an overview of each of those museums:
- The Palatine Gallery. This gallery, along with Royal and Imperial Apartments, occupies the entirety of the palace's first floor. Paintings on display are from the private collection of the powerful Medici family; among them are the works of Raphael, Tintoretto, Titian, Rubens, and Caravaggio.
- The Museum of Russian Icons. This museum is home to Western Europe's most ancient collection of Russian Icons. Most of these icons were acquired during the reign of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty before 1761. Another highlight is the Palatine Chapel, built under orders of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1766.
- The Treasury of the Grand Dukes. As the name suggests, this museum displays the treasures amassed by the Grand Dukes over the years: the Medici's Treasure, the Treasure of Salzburg, and a beautiful jewelry collection from the 17th to 20th centuries.
- The Museum of Costume and Fashion. This museum includes examples of clothing, accessories, and jewelry from the 18th century to the present day. Unfortunately, this museum is closed; check the official website for updates.
- The Gallery of Modern Art. The collection of this museum includes artworks from the 18th to early 20th century, from Romanticism and Neoclassicism to Symbolism and more.
Located at the heart of Florence, Palazzo Pitti is close to the iconic Ponte Vecchio across the River Arno. You can get to the museum by bus, tram, or on foot. Bus route C4 is your best option, as its Pitti stop is next to the palace. Tram T2 will take you to Unita, the closest tram station to Palazzo Pitti; it's a short walk from Unita to the museum.
The entry ticket for Palazzo Pitti covers all museums under its roof; it costs €10. Children younger than 18 can visit the museum for free.
We recommend our "The Wonder of the Palatine Gallery Tour", which lets you fully experience the beauty and splendor of the Palatine Gallery. You will embark on an exciting journey through three centuries worth of art inside the magnificent halls of this gallery.
