Insider tips for visiting Tel Aviv

Лада Samoylov

Лада Samoylov is a local guide who has been publishing tours since 2020 for your discovery of hidden gems and local specialities of Tel Aviv on their personal guide page (view profile). Explore their expert tips planning trip to Tel Aviv.

When friends ask me where to eat when they visit Tel Aviv, I always send them first to Kerem HaTeimanim and Levinsky. In Kerem, I love slipping into the tiny streets near Carmel Market for kubaneh in the morning and grilled fish by lunch. Levinsky feels more local—Balkan bakeries, spice shops, and some of my favorite casual wine bars in Tel Aviv. Florentin is where I go at night for creative small plates and late cocktails, especially on quieter side streets, not the main drag. For anyone building a travel guide Tel Aviv style, these neighborhoods are among the best things to do in Tel Aviv because you taste the city, not just see it.

When I’m alone in Tel Aviv, I start with a long walk from Jaffa Port up the Tayelet at sunrise, then duck into the old Yemeni quarter for coffee and malawach near Carmel Market. For me, that’s one of the most rewarding things to do in Tel Aviv because the city opens slowly and you can join it at your own pace. Later, I browse the small galleries and design shops around Nachalat Binyamin, then end on the beach steps with a beer at sunset. Many attractions in Tel Aviv are social without pressure, and even the popular tours in Tel Aviv miss how much of what to see in Tel Aviv is simply found by wandering.

When I want to show the real Tel Aviv, I split my time between Jaffa, Neve Tzedek, Florentin, and Levinsky. Jaffa gives you sea air, flea market alleys, and quiet courtyards if you step a block away from the main square. In Neve Tzedek, I like wandering the smaller lanes behind Shabazi for beautiful houses and tucked-away cafés. Florentin is where Tel Aviv feels young and a little rough around the edges, especially around evening when the bars wake up. Levinsky is one of my favorite attractions in Tel Aviv for food and everyday city life. Many tours in Tel Aviv skip these details, but this is exactly what to see in Tel Aviv.

When I help friends choose where to sleep in Tel Aviv, I usually match the area to their rhythm. For a first visit Tel Aviv experience, I like Lev Ha’Ir: you can walk to Rothschild, Carmel Market, and the beach without feeling stuck in the busiest hotel strip. If you want evenings full of bars and cafés, Florentin suits you better, though it can be noisy. I often suggest Neve Tzedek for a calmer stay with pretty streets and easy access to Jaffa. In any travel guide Tel Aviv locals would write, location matters because many of the best things to do in Tel Aviv are easiest on foot.

When people ask me where Tel Aviv really comes alive after dark, I usually say Florentin first. If you visit Tel Aviv and want bars that spill onto the pavement, late kitchens, and a younger local crowd, Florentin has the strongest energy, especially around Vital and the smaller side streets nearby. I also like Lev Ha’Ir around Rothschild for a more polished night—cocktail bars, hidden courtyards, and places where Tel Aviv feels stylish rather than loud. In my travel guide Tel Aviv notes, I always add that the best things to do in Tel Aviv at night depend on your pace: Florentin for edge, center city for ease.

In my experience, the sweetest months are April to early June and then late September to November. When I visit Tel Aviv’s beaches or walk through Jaffa in those seasons, the light is softer, the sea is warm enough, and you can actually enjoy the city by foot. Summer in Tel Aviv has great energy, but the humidity can wear people down by midday. If I were writing a practical travel guide Tel Aviv locals would trust, I’d say spring and autumn give you the best balance for food markets, beach time, and other things to do in Tel Aviv. If you visit Tel Aviv in winter, expect quieter streets and beautiful stormy sunsets.
