The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most iconic historical buildings in Italy. Located in the central Piazza dei Miracoli (Piazza del Duomo), this elegant Romanesque bell tower started to tilt during its construction because of uneven ground. Works were stopped for almost a century to allow the subsoil to settle. When construction resumed, one side of the tower was made taller than the other to compensate for the tilt…which ultimately didn’t help.
Despite numerous efforts, the inclination has been increasing over the centuries until the 1990s, when reconstruction and stabilisation processes that took 11 years eventually made the tower stop moving for the first time in its history. The construction was pronounced stable for the next 200 to 300 years, according to different estimates.
Some numbers you’d want to know about the Tower:
- Construction began in 1173 and was completed in the mid-14th century.
- The building is 58 m tall on the highest side, and 55 m on the lowest side.
- It weighs 14,700 metric tons.
- There are 296 steps to the top.
- There are 7 bells which are tuned to musical scale and have their own names.
- The inclination of the tower is about 4 degrees.
- Over 100 sensors are constantly monitoring the condition of the tower.
