About Tropenmuseum

The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM. In addition, it is open on Mondays during school vacations and public holidays. The museum is closed on New Year's Day, King's Day (April 27), and Christmas Day.

Despite being an off-the-beaten-path destination, Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum is rarely quiet because of school groups and local families with kids. The busiest days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The museum also tends to be crowded on weekends, but you can catch some quiet time in the early morning. Set aside at least 2–3 hours to explore everything.

  • Learn about different cultures

The Tropenmuseum (Museum of Tropics) is an absolute must-visit for those who have a deep interest in non-Western cultures. This large ethnographic museum focuses on the former Dutch Colonies and other countries from Africa to Southeast Asia and New Guinea to Latin America. Its massive collection includes textile artifacts, musical instruments, masks, theatrical puppets, drawings, paintings, and more than 150,000 historical photographs.

  • Admire the museum building

The Tropenmuseum is housed in one of the most spectacular museum buildings in the Netherlands. Right after entering the museum, you will admire its monumental Great Hall — a beautiful central atrium with myriad arches that affords a great view of what the museum offers. The exhibitions are spread over three levels and give an atmospheric flavor of life and history from around the world.

The Tropenmuseum is located in Amsterdam East at Linnaeusstraat 2, a 5-minute walk from three light rail stops. Take line 7 or 14 to Alexanderplein, line 19 to Eerste van Swindenstraat, or line 3 to the Linnaeusstraat stop. Also, you can discover Amsterdam from the water and reach the museum via Canal Bus or Artis Expressboat.

I stumbled upon this audio walking tour, and it was the best experience. I not only got to see some of the stand out attractions, but also. Some of the staple buildings and theaters of Seattle. It really gave me a sense for the culture in the city. I especially loved the $9 price tag. Thank you thank you! -Cybill
