The Vasa Museum is one of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in Sweden. It’s a maritime museum in Stockholm. Here are some of its highlights:
- This museum has an almost intact 17th-century ship. This ship, Vasa, was a Swedish warship that sank during its maiden voyage in 1628. It spent more than 300 years underwater, and almost all its parts are original. This warship is the only 17th-century ship that managed to survive until the present day. Visitors can examine the ship from outside on multiple levels and from different perspectives.
- You can learn about the history of Vasa and its recovery from the bottom of Stockholm harbor. Exhibitions in the museum focus on the history of the Swedish navy in the 17th century, the recovery of Vasa, its restoration, and the present measures to preserve the ship for future generations.
- Explore Vasa with a film about the warship. This film is a great introduction to this magnificent but ill-fated vessel.
You can find the Vasa Museum on the island of Djurgården. There are several ways to reach this museum: by bus, tram, metro, ferry, or on foot.
Tram 7 is the easiest option: all you need to do is board it and exit at the Vasamuseet tram stop. Bus routes 67, 69, and 76 will take you to Vasamuseet (67) and Djurgården (69 and 76) bus stops. Alternatively, the Karlaplan metro station on the Red Line is a viable travel option.
