Insider tips for visiting Abu Dhabi

Alexandra SamAlexandra Sam2024

When I visit Abu Dhabi, I usually mix taxis with the public bus network. Taxis are affordable, air-conditioned, and easy to flag down in the city, which matters in Abu Dhabi’s heat. For longer stretches, like heading from downtown to Saadiyat or Yas Island, I recommend using the bus if you want to save money, but I personally rely on taxis at midday and walk only in the cooler evening hours along the Corniche. In my travel guide Abu Dhabi tipbook, I always say: plan your day by neighborhood. It makes it much easier to visit Abu Dhabi smoothly and fit in more things to do in Abu Dhabi without wasting time in traffic.

When I want a quieter side of Abu Dhabi, I head to the Mangrove National Park boardwalk area near Anantara for sunrise light and herons skimming the water. Another favorite is the tiny Heritage Park on the Corniche end near Marina Mall, where Abu Dhabi families actually linger in the evening. For art, I love the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery on Saadiyat; the shows are thoughtful and far less crowded than the big-name museums. These are the kinds of attractions in Abu Dhabi I suggest to friends asking what to see in Abu Dhabi beyond the headline sights. Even many tours in Abu Dhabi skip these softer, local-feeling corners.

When I’m in Abu Dhabi as a couple, my favorite plan is a sunset walk through the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s outdoor sea-facing promenade, then dinner nearby on Saadiyat. The light there turns golden over the water, and Abu Dhabi feels surprisingly calm and intimate. I always recommend timing it just before dusk so you can enjoy the dome’s shifting shadows without the midday heat. Among all the things to do in Abu Dhabi, this feels the most memorable because it combines art, architecture, and a genuinely romantic setting. It’s one of those attractions in Abu Dhabi that also answers what to see in Abu Dhabi without relying on standard tours in Abu Dhabi.

When I want a lively evening in Abu Dhabi, I usually head to Al Maryah Island. It has the slickest concentration of rooftop bars, hotel lounges, and late-night restaurants, but it still feels polished rather than rowdy. For a more relaxed night, I like Yas Marina, especially in cooler months when people linger outside by the water. If you visit Abu Dhabi expecting one wild party district, that’s not really Abu Dhabi’s style; the city does nightlife in a more elegant, spread-out way. In my travel guide Abu Dhabi notes, I tell friends to choose the mood first—cocktails on Al Maryah or waterfront energy on Yas—then build the rest of their things to do in Abu Dhabi around that area.

When I visit Abu Dhabi, I usually tell first-timers to stay on Saadiyat Island or along the Corniche, depending on their style. Saadiyat feels calmer and more polished, with easy access to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and beautiful early-morning beach time. The Corniche puts you closer to everyday city life, local cafés, and evening walks where Abu Dhabi families gather after sunset. In my travel guide Abu Dhabi advice, I suggest Saadiyat if you want a resort feel, and the Corniche if you want to step out and immediately find more things to do in Abu Dhabi. Both make it easy to visit Abu Dhabi without spending your whole trip in taxis.

When I’m showing friends around Abu Dhabi, I usually mix three areas: the Corniche, Saadiyat, and Al Mina. The Corniche gives you that everyday Abu Dhabi rhythm—families out after dark, older cafés, and sea views that are best just before sunset. Saadiyat is where I go for culture and a quieter, more refined side of Abu Dhabi, especially around the museum district. Al Mina is the one many visitors miss; I like it for the fish market, port atmosphere, and newer warehouse-style food spots. These are the attractions in Abu Dhabi that help answer what to see in Abu Dhabi beyond standard tours in Abu Dhabi.
