Australia Zoo began in 1970 as the Beerwah Reptile Park, founded by Bob and Lyn Irwin. Their son Steve grew up working with its animals and, with his wife Terri, helped develop the park into Australia Zoo. Steve’s television work brought international attention to the zoo and to his message of wildlife conservation. After his death in 2006, the Irwin family continued that work. Today, the zoo is closely associated with crocodiles, but its collection also includes animals from around the world. Wildlife presentations and conservation education are central to the experience, while the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital reflects the family’s ongoing commitment to caring for injured native animals.
