About Bargello National Museum
The Bargello National Museum is open from 08:15 AM to 1:50 PM on Monday and from Wednesday to Friday, as well as on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month. On Saturday, the opening times are 08:15 AM – 6:50 PM. The last admission is 50 min before closing time.
On Tuesdays and on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, the museum is closed.
The museum, despite its glorious collection, is a bit of a hidden gem compared with some of other places in Florence, so it is usually relatively less crowded. However, if you wish to visit at the least busy times, you should aim for the morning or later afternoon.
The Museum is located at Via del Proconsolo, 4. It is easily accessible on foot from pretty much any location in the historic centre. It will take you about 14 min to walk from Santa Maria Novella Train station. C2 bus stops just outside the museum, C1, C3, and 23, in the vicinity.
It is not advisable to get there by car, because the museum is within the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) of Florence, where driving is strictly regulated.
Full price tickets to the Museum cost €9 for adults, reduced price tickets are €2 for youth aged 18-25. Admission is free for children under the age of 17 and holders of FirenzeCard.
The cumulative ticket allows access to the Bargello Museums (Bargello, Medici Chapels, Davanzati, Orsanmichele and Casa Martelli) over three consecutive days. It costs €21 and is valid for 72 hours.
Since Bargello is a State museum, there are 20 days in a year when you can visit for free: the first Sunday of each month between October and March and other days that are established by the museum.
Located in the mid-13th century Palazzo del Bargello that used to served as the seat of the local magistrate, the police headquarters, and a prison until mid-19th century, when it became the first Italian National Museum dedicated to the arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Bargello is one of the most important museums of Florence. It features an unrivaled collection of Renaissance sculptures, as well as maiolica, textiles, ivory, medals, seals, and silver, from the Medici collections and the private donors.
The sculptures on display spread across the three floors in a well-organised collection include those by:
- Michelangelo (Bacchus, the statue of the drunken god of wine that was commissioned by a cardinal, but was rejected for looking, apparently, too sinful)
- Donatello (David, the first nude male statue since antiquity)
- Benvenuto Cellini
- Giambologna
- Della Robbia family
- Lorenzo Ghiberti
- Filippo Brunelleschi
With its tall clock tower and open courtyard with an external staircase and a well in the center, the early Italian Gothic building itself is a charming place where you can get some rest from the tourist crowds while admiring some of the greatest sculptures by Italian masters.
