Directions

Take a train from Sydney to Katoomba, then check local buses or walking routes to your chosen lookout or trailhead.

Blue Mountains National Park lies on the Country of the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, whose connections to its valleys, waterways, and ridges long predate European settlement. In 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson, and William Charles Wentworth made a well-known colonial crossing of the Blue Mountains; it was not the first crossing of this landscape. Established in 1959, the national park helped protect its sandstone escarpments, eucalyptus forests, and deep valleys. It forms part of the Greater Blue Mountains Area, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 for its exceptional eucalypt diversity and natural habitats. Around Katoomba, lookouts reveal the Three Sisters and the Jamison Valley. The mountains’ characteristic blue appearance is associated with fine particles from eucalyptus vegetation scattering light.

Before you enter

  • Choose a specific lookout or walk before setting out; Blue Mountains National Park covers a large area.
  • Check current track closures, weather, and fire conditions before leaving Katoomba.
  • Pack water, sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a warm layer; conditions can change quickly.

What to expect

  • Expect expansive sandstone-cliff and valley views, particularly around Katoomba’s lookouts.
  • Walking routes vary widely in length and difficulty; check distances and elevation before starting.
  • Mobile reception may be patchy away from town and major lookouts.

During your visit

  • Stay on marked paths and behind lookout barriers, especially near cliff edges.
  • Start longer walks early and allow time to return before dark.
  • Carry out your rubbish and give wildlife plenty of space.
