Things to do in Kōfu for self travelers

When I visit Kōfu, I usually shop around Kōfu Station first, especially the north and south exits where local wine shops, Yamanashi fruit gift stores, and small craft boutiques are clustered. For a more everyday feel, I recommend heading to the Marunouchi and Chuo area, where locals browse independent fashion shops, stationery stores, and long-running confectioners rather than chain malls. I also like Asake and the backstreets near Orion Square for vintage finds and casual cafes. When I visit Kōfu, I usually stay near Kōfu Station in Marunouchi because it makes everything easy without feeling bland. When I visit Kōfu, I split my time between Marunouchi around Kōfu Station, Yumura Onsen, and the foothills near Takeda Shrine. Yumura Onsen feels slower, with traditional inns and bathhouses tucked into quiet streets. For atmosphere, I also like the northern area by Takeda Shrine, where cedar-lined paths and older neighborhoods show a more historic side of Kōfu. When I’m in Kōfu alone, I most enjoy walking from Kōfu Station to Maizuru Castle Park, then continuing through the older streets toward local wine bars and small hōtō noodle spots.
