Directions

From Massa di Somma, follow signs toward Vesuvius National Park and check your route to the crater trailhead before setting out.

Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79, which buried Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other Roman communities beneath ash and volcanic material. The disaster preserved an extraordinary record of daily life in the ancient Bay of Naples and made the volcano central to the study of Roman history. Accounts by Pliny the Younger remain important eyewitness descriptions of the eruption. Vesuvius has erupted many times since, most recently in 1944, and remains an active volcano. Its cone rises within the older Mount Somma volcanic complex, which gives the area around Massa di Somma its distinctive landscape. Today, the crater trail offers views into the volcano and, in clear weather, across the Bay of Naples.

Before you enter

  • Check the official park information for current access conditions before leaving.
  • Wear shoes with good grip for the steep, loose volcanic path.
  • Bring water, sun protection, and a layer for wind near the crater.

What to expect

  • The climb is steep in places but manageable at a steady pace.
  • Expect uneven volcanic gravel rather than a paved summit path.
  • Views across the Bay of Naples depend on haze and weather.

During your visit

  • Stay on marked paths and follow any instructions from park staff.
  • Pause at viewpoints to take in both the crater and the coastline.
  • Allow space for others on narrow sections of the trail.
