About Parc de l'Orangerie

The park is open daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

With its ample space, the park rarely gets too crowded, however, it might get busy in summer months and on sunny weekends. Make sure to go on weekday mornings if you wish to avoid other people as much as possible.

Strasbourg’s oldest park, the Parc de l'Orangerie, dates back to the 18th century. In 1804, the Joséphine pavilion was built (named after Joséphine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte) to house the 140 orange trees that were confiscated and brought over during the French Revolution. Under the German rule of Alsace, the Orangerie was expanded, and got an artificial lake with a waterfall.

A beautiful green space, it has become a favorite of the local residents and tourists, for picnicking, jogging, dog walking, or simply wandering around its alleys and paths and enjoying the atmosphere.

A few facts, hints, and tips about the park:

  • Only three orange trees remain to this date and are not always accessible to the public.
  • The stork the symbol of Alsace that had once been threatened with extinction — was successfully reintroduced here in the 1960s.
  • The Zoo de l'Orangerie was permanently closed in August 2022 due to concerns about the animals’ welfare, poor condition of their enclosures, lack of funds, and public interest. There are plans to open a mini-farm with domestic animals and to transform the place into an educational animal park.
  • You can still watch the swans on the lake, though — or rent a boat and paddle around.
  • Two statues are worth checking out: the traditional Gaenseliesel (Goose Girl) and the Puits voleur (the Thieving well), designed by Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand and installed in 1994.
  • Le Buerehiesel is a gourmet restaurant located in a timbered house that was built around 1600 and originally stood in Molsheim before being dismantled and transported to an exposition in Alsace. Its glass conservatory dining room and patio create a truly special atmosphere — and it has a Michelin star.
  • And if you’re just feeling peckish rather than intending to splurge on fancy food, you can grab an ice cream when it’s warm - or some chestnuts in the winter!

The park is located in the Orangerie district of Strasbourg, in Neustadt. It is close to the major European institutions such as the Council of Europe and the European Parliament and is bordered by the Canal de la Marne au Rhin.

You can walk to the park from the historic centre of the city in about 30 min. The park is also bicycle-friendly.

The nearest tram stop is Droits de l'Homme (line E). Conseil de l'Europe is the nearest bus stop (numbers 30, 72, and L6).

If you’re driving, there is a parking lot at 11 Avenue de l'Europe.
