Insider tips for visiting Mont Saint-Michel

Igor RosenIgor Rosen2020

For couples, I always recommend staying on Mont Saint-Michel until the late afternoon crowds thin out, then climbing the ramparts together just before sunset. It’s one of my favorite things to do in Mont Saint-Michel because the bay turns silver-pink, the wind softens, and the island suddenly feels intimate. When I visit, I slip into the small side lanes behind Grande Rue and pause near the parish church garden—few people linger there, and the views are lovely. Among the attractions in Mont Saint-Michel, this quiet walk is far more romantic than rushing the abbey. If you’re wondering what to see in Mont Saint-Michel, I’d say the changing light itself beats most tours in Mont Saint-Michel.

If you visit Mont Saint-Michel expecting a nightlife district, you’ll be disappointed—Mont Saint-Michel goes quiet after dark, and that’s exactly its charm. I always tell people there isn’t really a “best neighborhood” for nightlife here; the most memorable evening is simply wandering the village once the last buses leave. For me, one of the best things to do in Mont Saint-Michel is to walk the ramparts at blue hour, when the stone lanes empty out and the bay feels enormous. In my travel guide Mont Saint-Michel, I suggest staying overnight if possible, because nighttime on Mont Saint-Michel is about atmosphere, not bars.
