About Place d'Armes
The Place d'Armes, or Plëss d'Arem in Luxembourgish, the busiest and the most vibrant square in town, was completed in 1671. Historically, it used to serve as a military parade ground and was paved with flagstones and bordered with lime trees under Louis XIV. It was here that France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy signed the Benelux cooperation agreement between the six countries in 1958. Today, this is a bustling urban space with numerous restaurants and cafes, cozy terraces to relax with a drink, street vendors selling various trinkets and souvenirs, and a lively cultural atmosphere.
Highlights of the square include:
- Open-air concerts at the Kiosk in the center of the square
- The annual Christmas market, part of the Winterlights festival with its cultural events, holiday shopping, and activities for children and adults, featuring lights, stalls with traditional food and souvenirs, a nativity scene display and other decorations, and, of course, the Christmas staple, mulled wine
- The antique market that takes place twice a month, the place to get a few curious vintage items, from tableware and furniture to decorative art pieces
- Dicks-Lentz monument to commemorate the two local poets who wrote the national anthem
The Square, located in the center of the old town, is easily accessible on foot, by bike, or by public transport. The nearest bus stop is Centre, Gruef (buses 19, 31, and CSB), just a 2 min walk from the Square. Hamilius on Boulevard Royal is the nearest tram stop, about 4 min walk away.
A walk from Luxembourg’s main railway station takes about 17 min. There is also a bike-sharing station at Place Guillaume nearby.
Parking Knuedler is just around the block. We recommend walking, cycling, or using public transport in the old town, though.
