Directions

Aarhus Cathedral stands on Store Torv in central Aarhus, beside the theatre.

Aarhus Cathedral has stood at the heart of Aarhus since the late 12th century. Dedicated to Saint Clement, it began as a Romanesque church and later took on the Gothic character visible today. Its long nave makes it Denmark’s longest cathedral and a prominent landmark on Store Torv. Inside, look beyond the scale of the building to the medieval frescoes across its walls and arches; many date from around 1470–1520. The imposing altarpiece, made by medieval artist Bernt Notke in 1479, is another highlight. Still a place of worship, the cathedral connects the city’s medieval history with everyday life in its busy central square.

Before you enter

  • Check the current opening hours before setting out; the listed schedule shows Sunday as closed.
  • Allow time to see the exterior from Store Torv as well as the interior.
  • Bear in mind that services may affect access to parts of this active church.

What to expect

  • Look for Gothic architecture alongside elements of the cathedral’s Romanesque origins.
  • The frescoes reward a slow look at the walls and arches.
  • Bernt Notke’s large 1479 altarpiece is a focal point inside.

During your visit

  • Keep your voice low and give worshippers space.
  • Pause near the entrance to take in the length of the nave.
  • Check any posted guidance before taking photographs.
