Directions

Walk about 15 minutes from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station to Piazza del Duomo; the dome entrance is on the cathedral’s north side.

The Cupola del Brunelleschi crowns Florence’s Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Filippo Brunelleschi designed its vast dome in the early 15th century, solving a building challenge that had remained unanswered since the cathedral’s construction began in 1296. Built between 1420 and 1436, its two shells and ingenious brickwork allowed it to rise without the enormous wooden framework traditionally used to support an arch during construction. The cathedral was consecrated in 1436, and the dome became an emblem of Florence’s architectural ambition and Renaissance ingenuity. Inside, visitors can look closely at the dome’s painted Last Judgment, begun by Giorgio Vasari and completed by Federico Zuccari in the 16th century. The climb also reveals the structure’s unusual passageways before opening onto a panorama of the city.

Before you enter

  • Reserve a timed entry in advance, especially for spring, summer, and weekends.
  • Check the current opening schedule; Sunday entry begins later than on other days.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the climb.

What to expect

  • The climb has 463 steps and no lift.
  • Some stairways are steep and narrow, with confined passages between the dome’s shells.
  • You’ll see the interior frescoes up close before reaching the outdoor viewpoint.

During your visit

  • Keep a steady pace on the stairs and let faster visitors pass where space allows.
  • Pause to examine the dome’s construction as you move between its two shells.
  • At the top, look for Giotto’s bell tower and the rooftops spreading across Florence.
