Diocletian’s Palace was built around the turn of the fourth century for the Roman emperor Diocletian, who retired here after abdicating in 305. Part imperial residence and part fortified complex, it was enclosed by walls and gates, with a central ceremonial courtyard known as the Peristyle. After the nearby city of Salona declined, people settled within the palace walls, gradually turning the complex into the heart of Split. This long history remains visible: Diocletian’s mausoleum became the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, while the Temple of Jupiter was later adapted as a baptistery. Today, ancient stonework stands alongside homes, shops, and cafés, making the palace a lived-in historic district rather than a single building. It forms part of Split’s UNESCO-listed historic complex.
